SealordTM Community

Care for the environment is one of Sealord's core values. As a supplier of seafood we recognise our responsibility to ensure there are fish for the future, by fishing sustainably. We seek to reduce our impact on the environment and actively look for environmentally friendly ways of carrying out our business with organisations such as the Seafood Industry Council and Marine Stewardship Council.

Making time for life

Here at Sealord, we know that it is enjoyable to make more time for life. Eating healthy does not need to be time consuming or complicated. So we have come up with some great quick and simple recipes, and are bringing them to your local club to try!

Nutritionists recommend 2-3 servings of seafood a week to maintain a healthy balanced diet, and oily fish is one of the richest sources of Omega 3. Research shows that Omega 3 fatty acids have numerous health benefits including promoting a healthy heart.

So whether it’s our Tuna salad, Salmon pita pocket or Tuna bruschetta, there are some fantastic ways to incorporate more seafood into your diet, without complication.

Look out for our Sealord team at your local bowls, tennis, or golf club, and you can sample our delicious recipes for yourself.

SealordTM are proud sponsors of the Sealord New Zealand Maori Centenary Series.

There are three games in the 2010 Series: Saturday 12th June, Friday 18th June and Wednesday 26th June.

The Sealord New Zealand Maori Centenary Series is a great opportunity to see our fantastic New Zealand Maori rugby team players in action. The three games are being played in Whangarei, Rotorua and Napier respectively. Rotorua is where the inaugural New Zealand Maori game was held in 1910 against a Rotorua sub union team.  The New Zealand Maori took out that historic match 25-5.

They will be playing international matches against 6 Nations heavyweights England and Ireland, and an opening game against the New Zealand Barbarians. It will be the first time the New Zealand Maori have played Ireland, so it is bound to be a great game to watch!

There are more than 500 living former New Zealand Maori players, many of whom have also played for the All Blacks. Players such as Tane Norton, Buck Shelford and Taine Randall have had the privilege of captaining both teams, so be sure to keep an eye out for them in the crowds at the games.

The Series promises to be one of the most exciting set of games in the team’s history, with an amazing turnout of supporters to cheer them on. We look forward to seeing you there in the crowd to show your support!

Sustainable Fishing

The main piece of legislation in New Zealand that ensures sustainable management of our fisheries resources is the Fisheries Act 1996.  This is managed through the Quota Management System so New Zealand’s fish stocks around the 200 mile territorial waters can be managed in a responsible way.

We are committed to fishing in a sustainable way.  We have secure access to about 21 percent of New Zealand's quota and have alliances or joint ventures in other countries. In New Zealand waters we work with other fish Quota Holders, through fisheries stakeholder companies, to improve and monitor fishing standards and carry out research on fish stocks.

MSC is an independent, global, non-profit organisation which has developed an environment standard for well-managed and sustainable fisheries.  It focuses on the condition of fish stock, the impact of the fishery on the marine ecosystem and fishery management systems.  Sealord Hoki products currently carry the MSC stamp of approval, assuring you that New Zealand’s Hoki stocks are well managed and sustainable.

Sustainable and Equitable Tuna Procurement Policy

Sealord Tuna products are enjoyed by many New Zealanders everyday. Sealord recognises the importance of sourcing tuna responsibly for its ongoing sustainability. We have controls to ensure this happens.

Dolphin Friendly Policy

Sealord is committed to protecting dolphins and our products are dolphin friendly. Sealord purchases canned tuna directly from suppliers that are certified and monitored by the Earth Island Institute (the non-profit, non-Governmental conservation organisation that founded the dolphin safe standards in 1990).

Earth Island Institute monitors tuna companies around the world to ensure the tuna is caught by methods that do not harm dolphins and protect the marine ecosystem. These agreements pledge tuna companies to abide by the Earth Island international “Dolphin Safe” tuna standards of no encirclement of dolphins or other marine mammals during an entire fishing trip, no accidental deaths or serious injuries of any dolphins, and no use of drift gill nets.

We can insure consumers that the tuna they buy is truly “dolphin safe“.

For more information about the dolphin safe label see the Earth Island Institute.

Protecting Seabirds

Fishing without catching these wonderful creatures can be a real challenge because of the abundance of seabird species in the water where NZ vessels operate.

However, Sealord has taken signficant steps to prevent the capture of seabirds.  This includes  a variety of techniques, which includes ingenious devices that confuse or deter the birds from feeding near the lines.  A Code of Practice has also been written up and New Zealand is now taking an advisory role to other countries.
